Two Month Checkup

Today, Austin had his two month check up. He weighed 12lbs, 3oz and measured 23.5 inches long. I can't believe how big he's getting! He's doubled his weight (almost) since birth and has grown about 4 inches! That makes him seem like such a tiny baby when he was born.

The doctor checked his development today. She flipped him on his tummy (and he hates tummy time, and is DONE in about ten minutes), and he was doing his mini push ups! I have to put him on my tummy just to get him to do that at home. His doctor was very pleased, and she loved his chubby legs! He even gave her a small smile complete with dimples while she was talking to him. The nurses kept saying how cute he was in his little denim outfit. :)

This week was the first week we've started putting him in his crib overnight. I knew he was ready (he was getting a little big to lay with me in the bed and I think he was uncomfortable), but I did expect a night or two of him waking up more than usual. However, the first night, he went down around 11pm and slept until his normal time of 5:30am. The next night, he went to bed just before midnight and slept through the night until just after 7am! I woke up around 6am, looked at my phone at the time, and almost had a mini heart attack because he didn't wake up. But then I calmed myself down enough to doze back off for another hour or so. (His Angelcare movement monitor helps calm my nerves a lot at night while he sleeps. It has an icon on my unit so I can see that the mat is sensing his movement/breathing. This helps me A LOT!) The next night, I was hoping he would sleep through again. I was also wondering if it was just  a fluke, but this morning I had to get up for his appointment just after 7am, and he was still sleeping! I had to wake him up to get his morning bottle in before we left, and he was mad! But that quickly turned around when he figured out he was about to get fed.

It's hard to believe that he will be three months old in a few weeks!

Austin is two months old!

Austin just turned two months old over a week ago. Technically he'll be 10 weeks on Monday. He has changed so much in just over a month.

He had his first cold a few weeks ago, and he also started showing signs of acid reflux. Poor guy didn't feel well at all for a few weeks, but we finally got past that mean old cold! I know there will be times where he may even be sicker than just a cold, but it's hard when your baby isn't feeling well. And at the same time, he was having problems with reflux. I had to start supplementing after every feeding with formula, and that's when the reflux started. He would just cry and cry and you could hear the liquid coming back up in his throat after a meal. We are having an upper GI done this week (we had to reschedule since he was feeling so bad with his cold), and maybe it will give us some answers, and we can finally put him on some medication if needed. His doctor recommended adding a bit of rice cereal to his bottles. I was a little uneasy with this suggestion, since babies aren't supposed to start solids until four months, if then. I tried one bottle with cereal in it, and he had NO problems afterwards. It was like he was a different baby. NO crying, NO gagging, NO choking. I was going to start doing the rice cereal with every other bottle, but after giving him ONE two ounce bottle without it, he threw up the entire bottle. We have been sticking to the rice cereal theory since then... Ha ha.

He's been gaining weight like crazy! Nothing too serious, but since he was a little behind in the beginning, he seems so chubby now! At his last appointment, he was ten pounds even. Josh weighed him a week or so ago, and Austin was about twelve pounds, then. We go back to the doctor this week for his two month checkup with shots (AHHH!!), and I'm excited to see how much he's grown.

He's finally started developing a schedule, which helps me a lot during the day (and at night, too!). He will only go about 6 hours at night without a feeding, even if I try to feed him more before his bed time. Hopefully, he'll start sleeping a little longer, but I can deal with waking up only once in the night! We're transitioning the move into his bedroom, and I'm super nervous. I'm a FREAK when I think about SIDS or anything happening to him while he's sleeping. The first night I put him in his crib, he kicked and looked around for a while, cried out a few times, but he fell asleep with no problems. I checked on him about a thousand times, where he looked just as content as he could be. But right before I went to bed, I couldn't take it any longer, and I took him back to bed with me. He's going to be just fine, but I don't know if I will be! Lol.

Austin has been smiling occasionally since before he was six weeks old, but now he smiles any time I talk to him. He even giggled for the first time last night, and I about died! It was so unexpected. I was blowing raspberries at him, and I guess he just thought it was hilarious. But he hasn't laughed since, and believe me, I've been doing the raspberry thing over and over to hear that sweet laugh again.

He's also discovered that his hands are attached to him and that he can chew on them. He still like his paci every once in a while (thank goodness he's not a huge paci fan), but when the paci falls out, he knows his hands are always available as a back up!

His personality is just beginning to peek through, and I can't wait to see how he's going to be. If he's anything like his father, Lord help us. Ha! (Josh would say the same about me, too.)

Austin is such a joy, and I can't believe how fast he is growing!

A Month with Austin

I can't believe it's already been over a month since my sweet baby was born. Born on December 19th, after less than five short hours of labor (I was lucky!), at 12:59pm. He weighed in at 6lbs 13oz and was 19 3/4 inches long.

Everyone kept telling me that caring for a newborn wasn't going to be easy, but it would be worth it (eventually). Right, they were! The first few weeks were rough. Wake up calls every two hours were taking their toll on me. The "baby blues" had their hold on me the first few weeks and would not let go! But around the time Austin was three weeks old and had started sleeping 4 hour streches, I began to feel better, and all the hard times were worth it!

His first few days were hard. I wanted to try breastfeeding, but I didn't know how hard it could be. In the beginning, he had trouble latching, and he wasn't getting enough to eat. He lost almost 10% of his birth weight, and his nurse recommended seeing a pediatrician a few days after we took him home. At four days old, he weighed 6lbs 2oz. A week later, he was back up to 6lbs 12oz! The doctor said that was great, since it usually can take up to 14 days to get a newborn back to birth weight.

Yesterday, we went back to the doctor for his one month checkup. He was 20 3/4 inches but only weighed 7lbs 2oz. This put him at about the 10th percentile for weight, and the doctor diagnosed him as failure to thrive. Failure to thrive sounds a lot scarier than it really is (even though, yes, if it goes to far could get pretty scary for a tiny baby). We recently had started supplementing Austin with formula because he always seemed so hungry even after just eating. The doctor recommended us to supplement after EVERY feeding now, and Austin does seem better satisfied and not as fussy. We go back on Tuesday to recheck his progress, and since he's been eating like a little pig, hopefully he will put on some pounds! I'm determined not to give up on breastfeeding, so I hope this breast milk/formula feeding will work.

In the past month, Austin has been more alert during the day, looking around and staring at different things. His favorite lately is staring at himself in the mirror while getting his diaper changed (Which helps him not to pitch fits. Being changed, diaper or clothes, is his least favorite thing in the world.) He's even started smiling some while awake (he smiles and laughs during his naps!). Austin also had an accidental flip over while playing on his tummy with Josh. He can move from his tummy to his side, but most of the time his arm gets in the way of him moving all the way to his back. However, the other day, he had made it to his side and somehow just fell over onto his back. He hasn't done that since, so we know he just fell over more than rolled over on his own.

I look foward to seeing how he continues to change over the next month.  It's almost as if he changes every day and is beginning to look more and more like a little Josh.
